I just have to write about an eye opening experience I had yesterday. I came to this conclusion:
I don’t belong on Pinterest.
Don’t get me wrong, I love scrolling through beautiful pictures of food, babies, and clothes as much as the next girl, who doesn’t? But is it even real?
Allow me to share with you a slightly humbling moment.
My baby is turning one (I can’t handle it!) and so naturally I wanted to take some pics of him at this stage. Of course the whole “cake picture” is cute… you KNOW the ones I’m talking about with the perfectly smiling baby with a “messy” cute face from a bite of frosting that is probably organic, in the cutest vintage looking high chair with a party hat placed perfectly on their head like it doesn’t bother them at all and they could have a string making a dent under their chin for hours. Oh, and no mess at all except for on the baby’s face for mom to clean up with one wipe.
Simple right? So I thought.
Let’s be honest, those pics are cute. I’m not baggin on anyone who has success doing cute ones and mad props to you! However, this was how it all went down for us yesterday.
First off… I would’ve loved to do it on hardwood floor, but the lighting was a bust in my kitchen so we were on the carpet. Not ideal for a cake mess but what’s a mom to do? (I laid down a sheet guys, don’t have a heart attack!)
If you want to know the real truth. As mentioned previously I’m sure, I am not the best chef in the house. But I didn’t want to buy a cake that would be destroyed in 2.5 seconds so I whipped up a box cake, and tried the layering technique.
As most of you would know, you need to let the cake cool down before layering, but time was ticking towards nap time so I had to slightly skip that step.
This is what was goin down when I was trying to maneuver 2 hot round layers out of the oven.
I might have forgotten to mention the frosting. It may or may not have been a little bit too thin. Imagine milk on a cake and try to just give me the benefit on the doubt on that one.
Well, to make a long story short this “photo shoot” was a complete fail but at the same time one of my favorite memories I have with this little guy. The cake was a flop…literally. The second I put it down it did this….broke in half and then in fourths.
And he didn’t take one bite. (Can you blame him?) The pan was cooler anyway.
So instead I just started laughing, put my camera down, laid on the sheet with him and ate my own soggy cake while he did his claps and patty cakes.
I have to just share this part too because it added to our day. After cleaning up the mess, I went to shake the remaining crumbs off of our balcony (I’m on the 3rd floor and wasn’t thinking…clearly) and as my sheet is dangling off the building, I look over and a bus slowly drives by FULL of kids coming home from school. I look down and realize…
I’m still in my undergarments (Oh, Hi kids!).
Don’t. Mind. Me.
Life is so fun when it’s imperfect. It’s unexpected and fun to get messy and just LIVE. I think I’m more satisfied with these pictures then I ever would be with a Pinterest Perfect cake pic!
Mostly because I got a sweet face smiling at me and my craziness and there is nothing that makes me happier!
Happy 1 year baby. Here’s to the disaster behind the lens. (As my beautiful friend Ali calls it!) and some kind of an adventure every single day…not Pinterest style! 😉
