We spend day after day doing the same things…laundry, dishes, breaking up arguments, picking up scattered toys. It is easy to wish our time away as we countdown to the next bit of excitement that is on the horizon. However, everyday cannot be as thrilling as vacation or the milestones that we look forward to. Instead, we should seek out small joys that fill our hearts in the ordinary day.
A few months ago, I hosted a group of women in a gratitude challenge; a challenge that was to specifically seek out tiny pieces of our day to be grateful for. When we are tasked to look for things to be grateful for, we train our minds to be on the lookout for those things all day long. The same way that we can easily train our brains to find all the little things that make the day a bad one. Have you seen that meme…”Why is it that your clothes only get caught on the door handle when you’re in a bad mood?” When we focus on all of the mishaps we train our brain to find the “mishap” in each situation. BUT when we seek out things to be grateful for, we can find joy in the tiniest little blessings.
Mamas, we all have moments when we wish the laundry would magically fold itself, because doing it AGAIN is the last thing we want to do…and that is okay. It is important to remember what a blessing our day to day is.
Laundry: everyone gets to sleep on clean sheets
Dishes: the perfect time to listen to my favorite podcasts
Shopping for Groceries: a fridge full of food for my family
You get the point. If you look hard enough, you can find blessings in the most mundane of days. Grab a notebook or keep a piece of paper next to your bed and write down tiny blessings before you fall asleep for the night. Eventually it will be second nature to spot those small joys.
