The water was boiling on the stove, and I was getting everything out for our toddler lunch: mac and cheese.
My two year old was sitting at the table playing with his trucks and cars when he said, “Mommy, come sit by me?” I told him not right now because I was busy making lunch.
He replied with, “Oh, that makes me sad” in the sweetest, but saddest voice. He drooped his head down and stuck out his bottom lip.
I said, “What makes you sad?”
He replied, “You not coming to sit by me.”
At first I thought, wow! He’s actually been listening when I tell him things like ‘it makes me sad when you take toys from your brother!’ Then I thought, ‘Wow! Way to throw all the mom guilt at me!!’ Finally, those words hit me. Of course it makes him sad when I’m too busy for him.
Don’t you remember what it was like to be a kid? Don’t you remember you loved when any adult acknowledged you and took time to play with you or even just sit by you? Do you realize that your kids think you’re the best person ever? Because you are, especially to them!
So I set my timer for the noodles to cook, left the overflowing dishes in the sink and the crumbs on the counter, and all the daunting things I needed to do and sat down next to him. I talked to him. I played with him. I was present for him. Because I know these moments won’t last forever, and I want to soak them all in.
So mama, if your kids are asking to play with you, please just do it! They won’t be asking you forever. Even if you only have 10 minutes! The dishes, laundry, cleaning, cooking, etc. will always be there waiting for you, but your kids won’t stay little forever.
Go play.
Dance.
Snuggle.
Just have fun and enjoy the moments. And make memories with those sweet, beautiful babes of yours! They will be so happy, and you will be too!
