You know the scene in the movie The Wedding Planner when J Lo makes sure every detail is perfect before the bride walks down the aisle? She has her emergency kit strapped to her and her headset on. Tall trees that are bloomed with flowers line the aisle. The wedding she has planned is something you would see on Pinterest. Many people see that and instantly think, “I could never afford a wedding planner, only the rich can afford to hire one!” Well, let me tell you what, there are so many misconceptions about a wedding planner and I’m going to set the record straight!
I remember growing up sitting in Barnes and Noble as I flipped the pages of wedding magazines. My friend and I would spend our Friday nights envisioning what our wedding day would be like. To be completely honest I already had my colors and flowers picked out before my man got down on one knee! I just have always had a love for weddings and creating the perfect day for a couple. I knew it was what I wanted to do! Fast forward 10 years and here I am doing what I dreamed. I design and plan weddings for a company called Grace of Love Events. I work with brides will budgets on both sides of the spectrum. So, let me let you in on some of the secrets about a wedding planner that most people don’t even know!
“A Wedding Planner/Coordinator isn’t always expensive, but always worth it!” Most brides get turned off about the idea of hiring a wedding planner because they think of the cost and want to have a say in planning their wedding. And guess what, they can have both! Wedding planners usually have different packages they offer. They usually have full, partial, and month/day of planning. The more planning involved the more the cost. With tools like Pinterest and The Knot, so many brides want to plan the majority of their day, and they can! With a Day of Planner, you get to plan your wedding and then hand everything to the Planner to carry out the details on the day of the wedding. You get to relax and be a bride on your wedding day!
“I often am described as Magic!” One of the best compliments I ever received from a Bride was when she said, “You are like MAGIC! I think of something that needed to be done and bam, you already took care of it!” And that is what my job is! I am behind the scenes running all the vendors, guests, and chaos. I discreetly make sure everything is running smoothly.
“It isn’t as glamourous as the movies make it!” For a Planner, the wedding day is usually a 14 hour day on their feet, making sure every little thing is taken care of. It’s not uncommon to be picking up glass or beer off the floor, or folding over 200 napkins presidential style, or moving tables and chairs three times so the floorplan is just right! It’s a lot of hard work, but that’s what you do because you want it to be perfect for the Bride and Groom!
“Trust the Vendors the Planner refers!” Professional planners work with lots of vendors. And secretly they have their own A Team that they like to work with. Trust their preferred vendors, they have already done the vetting process for you. They know which vendors are professional and which ones aren’t. Plus, sometimes you can get a referral discount with them!
“It takes lots of training and experience!” Wedding planning is not for the faint of heart. It takes training and lots of experience. I have been in the industry for over four years and I still learn something new at every wedding. So if your deciding to book a planner or have your cousin who thinks it sounds fun….please for the grace of all things good, hire the planner!
“They are the Captain of your Ship!” If you have ever planned a wedding then you know there are many moving parts. It’s the arrival times of all your vendors, making sure the seating chart has everyone’s name and table correct, or creating a flawless timeline for the entire day. A planner takes care of all these things. Most people don’t know the right questions to ask throughout their planning process. A planner guides you in your journey. I can’t tell you how many times I have a Bride or a Mother of the Bride say, “I would have never thought of that!” Trust your planner, let them be the captain of your ship! They will guide you into a successful event!
I’ve never had a Bride who didn’t say that the best money they spent was on a Wedding planner! I love when I have guests who come to me and tell me that it was the smoothest and most fun wedding they have attended. That is when I know I have created a perfect Wedding day for the couple. And when the couple comes up to you at the end of the night with a huge hug and thank you, it’s the icing on the cake!
