Skin Care Favorites

I’ve been a little MIA lately with this blog, but I wanted to share some of my favorite skin care products and my nightly routine that I do. I’m one of those girls who can’t fall asleep without brushing my teeth and washing my face…and I’ve been on the search for months for something more natural to help the bags under my eyes, acne scars, and large pores. Thanks to my mother-in-law, I am sold on all of these! I get so excited to get ready for bed because my face and skin feels amazing when I’m done!

Witch Hazel: I use this witch hazel as a toner (especially on the side of my nose where my pores are bigger), as well as my T-zone and I’ve seen a difference in just the last month of using it! I’ve been so excited about it! After you shower (when your pores are most open), you use a cotton ball and apply it all over. Wait for it to dry before applying make-up or any other moisturizer. I use this every single night and when I have a few extra minutes after a shower in the morning.

 

Moisturizer: I’ve been using this Age Reversal for my whole face, but especially under my eyes. (is it just me, or do you instantly get old and start aging when you become a mom!?) This helps firm your skin and I can feel that firmness still by the morning, it’s awesome. The only bad part is that is it a little bit on the pricy side – but a little goes a long way in this little bottle and I would say it’s completely worth it! (And I’m a cheap skate!) UPDATE: this is on sale RIGHT NOW — Almost $25 off + Free Shipping (only 20 left!). I swear by this stuff!

Body Butter: All my Utah friends — you NEED this! Especially during these winter months. My skin isn’t as dry in Texas but I still use this every single night. And the rule at our house, is if we go to bed by 10 (since I get a little distracted at night) my hubs will give me a foot rub with this! Ummmm yes. If you’re needing to give your spouse some hints for Valentines… this is it! (SIDE NOTE: Last I heard Trader Joes was pretty much out of this (we got the very last ones at the TJ’s out here) so I was happy to see it on Amazon. Holla!

Chapstick: Okay… coming from the girl who is constantly trying different chapsticks… this one takes the cake. I never have chapped lips because of it. Use it every night!

If I don’t get ready for bed with these I feel like I’m missing out! It’s 5 minutes of pampering yourself and makes you feel so refreshed. What does your nightly routine look like? Would love to hear about the products you use too!

Hospital Bag Checklist

I’m pretty sure the question a lot of moms ask more than anything else is “What should I pack in my hospital bag for when I have my baby?”. So I’ve decided to create a “master list” for moms to be able to refer to. Keep in mind, I think it’s good to keep it simple. So these are just suggestions. (Click on the items to see what brand I use or like + make sure to pin this for later!)

 

HOSPITAL BAG:

For baby:

1 or 2 Newborn outfits to go home in (The hospital will have outfits during your stay)

Boppy Pillow

For Mama:

Razor: It feels heavenly to shave your legs now that you can finally reach!

Make-up: I just brought the minimum needed like foundation and mascara unless you are wanting more for pictures.

Flip Flops to shower in

Nursing Bra if you plan on nursing or anything that is “easy access” – I just wore the hospital robe the whole time and it worked!

Nipple Cream

Robe (if you want to get out of the hospital one)

Comfy, loose clothes to go home in

Pads: The hospital will give you some cute ones to wear;) but I liked having extra of my own just in case.

Snacks: protein filled are a bonus.

Phone + Phone Charger

Music/Movies: I pushed with Katy Perry blasting “Roar” because I felt like I was doing a thousand sit ups and it helped me get pumped to keep going! Everyone is so different tho, some like relaxing music on, or none at all.

The Best Self Tanners

I’ve rounded up my favorite self tanners to follow up my sunscreen post. Because like I said, who doesn’t feel better with a tan?? Ok, ok… I guess there are a select few of you that look unbelievable with your porcelain skin but I, unfortunately, did not get that lucky. So let’s talk about how I’ve been using self tanners and tanning beds since I can remember. Don’t worry– I’ve gotten smarter and quit those tanning beds. My first year of college, I realized it was time to go to the dermatologist and get my moles checked. He said that a few of them were a little questionable so we removed them. A week later when I got the phone call about my biopsy results, I was shocked to hear that some of them had precancerous cells. After that, I never went to a tanning bed again… But I still wanted to solve my pale skin problem so the hunt for the greatest self tanners begun! So here they are:

 

Endless Glow Airbrush Spray $$$— I got this one from a friend for Christmas and absolutely LOVE it. It doesn’t have the self tanner smell (you know what I’m talking about.. ew) and it doesn’t rub off on your clothes. It also shows up more gradually, so the longer you have it on, the more tan you get! I can literally spray this on before I get ready for the day and go because you don’t stink and you don’t look like an oompa loompa! Cons? It’s pretty pricey and purchasing it is weird.. You either need to know someone who works for Endless Glow or have a customer ID on their website. I tried finding it on Amazon and couldn’t. Lame! I want it to be easy and if I need/want some more, I want it RIGHT NOW! 😉

Quick Tan Bronzing Spray $– This is my alternative to the one above. You can purchase it at Sally’s Beauty Supply for about $15 or this one you can actually find on Amazon. I’ve linked a 3 pack for only $26!! That’s a steal. This one is fantastic too! I was using this before my awesome friend gave me the Endless Glow spray. I like that this one looks super tan immediately. You can see right where it’s going and you instantly look like you just got back from Mexico. The smell isn’t too bad either! I will say that this one will rub off slightly on your clothes but it does wash out. So maybe use this one on a day that you’re wearing black or use it like I do.. At night before bed! Then you wash it off in the morning and are left with bronzed skin.

FakeBake Xtreme $$— I love using airbrush sprays on my chest/neck/face because they’re so quick and easy, no mess on your hands and they’re streak-free. But for my arms/legs they just don’t work very well. I feel like more gets on the floor than on my body and it can end up looking streaky. That’s why I have two rub on options, as well. I love this gel by FakeBake. I purchase mine at the beauty supply store! So if you have your license or know someone that does, have them pick this up for you at your local CosmoProf. Or you can always count on Amazon to pull through so I’ve linked one from there. This gel is awesome! Nice and dark so you can see right where it’s going, easy to apply and pretty fool-proof. I feel like I may see small streaks here and there when I apply but after I shower, they’re gone. My tip for gels/lotions/mousse tanners is to wear gloves. That’s the easiest way to avoid super tan palms! The smell on this one isn’t too bad and I love the instant color.

St. Tropez Mousse $$$– This one is pretty pricey at $42 but I’m telling you.. It’s worth it!! It smells so good and is so easy to apply. I love the airy mousse! It literally goes on like butter and dries in less than a minute! It gives you an instant tan and I feel like I can do it in the morning and wear it all day because it looks so good. The color SLIGHTLY rubs off onto your clothes so once again, wear a darker color that day. But it’s always come out of my white clothes in the washer. The bottle also lasts a really long time! I’ve had the same one for 6+ months and I still have quite a bit left. I use it about once a week or once every two weeks! Also– they tell you that you should be using their mitt but it’s really not necessary. Just use latex gloves so that it doesn’t get on your hands! I’ve never used the mitt and still feel like my tan is streak free and blended really well.

SPF Facts + Favs

Let’s be honest– everyone loves a good tan. Am I right? I know that I feel a million times better about myself and the way I look, when I have a bit of color to my skin. With summer in full swing, we’re going to talk about the different types of sunscreens, sun exposure, and my favorite sunscreen picks!

So UVA vs. UVB??

UVA— penetrates deep into the skin, leads to premature skin aging and skin cancer
UVB— burns the superficial layers, rays vary depending on season and time of day, etc
Just think– UVAging and UVBurning

What about classic/chemical sunscreens vs. mineral sunscreens??

classic/chemical— active ingredients that absorb the uv rays, needs to be applied 30 min prior to sun exposure
mineral— commonly referred to as physical sunscreen, more natural approach (better for babies/children), mineral based ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, effective right after application

What’s the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50??

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and the number refers to their ability to deflect UVB rays.  The SPF number is calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to burn sunscreen-protected skin vs. unprotected skin.

So let’s pretend that I typically burn after 10 minutes in the sun and I put on SPF 2, I now have double that time before a sunburn, so 20 minutes. My skin protected with SPF 15 would take 15 times longer, or 150 minutes before I receive a sunburn. BUT the actual difference in UV protection from 30-50 is only about 2% more. That’s why we constantly need to be reapplying our sunscreen!! If you’re not good at reapplying, you’ll probably be better off choosing a higher number.

Great tips when it comes to the sun and exposing our skin:

  • Don’t forget your lips! Make sure you’re wearing chapstick that has an SPF15 or higher
  • The best protection is covering up. Sunglasses, long sleeves, wide brimmed hats, etc.
  • Use extra caution when you’re at the pool, beach, or even on the slopes. Water, snow & sand are great reflectors and they strengthen the rays.
  • Avoid 10am-4pm. This is when the burning rays are the strongest!
  • Having an SPF 15 or SPF25 in your daily moisturizer or makeup is NOT ENOUGH. We learned in skin school that to actually achieve the SPF15, you’d have to use a tablespoon of that foundation. Gross!! So use an actual sunscreen underneath your makeup for real protection!
  • Reapply every 2 hours if you’re in direct sun!

And now for my favorite sunscreens:

Kids– The biggest thing with kids/babies is to get a mineral based or more natural sunscreen.. Also, avoid the sprays even though they are so much easier. Inhalation is not good and happens no matter how careful we try to be. My favorite is Babyganics Mineral Based Sunscreen SPF 50

My Face– Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF50. I love this one by dermalogica. I put it over my moisturizer and under my face makeup. You could even mix it with your tinted moisturizer! Dermalogica is a little more pricey but this bottle will last you quite awhile and if this saves my skin from aging so quickly.. SIGN ME UP! But a cheaper option that also gets great reviews is the La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 50 Mineral Ultra-Light Sunscreen Fluid Tinted.

Everyday Body–  Surprisingly, I really dislike putting moisturizer all over my body on a day to day basis. Something about it just bothers me and I really don’t like that sticky feeling. I try to get over that though when it comes to sunscreen and protecting my skin. I found an awesome product by Aveeno that smells good and actually isn’t sticky.. Yay! This is a great alternative to your daily body moisturizer, especially if you’re going to be spending time outside. Aveeno Protect + Hydrate SPF50 Lotion 

Beach/Pool/Park Body– If I know I’m going to be in the sun for an extended period of time then I use another sunscreen on top of the daily sunscreens. I love that this one is more of a natural option but still gets the job done.. Coola Sport Continuous Sunscreen Spray SPF 30. A drugstore option that smells SO FANTASTIC is the Neutrogena Beach Defense Spray SPF70.

 

Hopefully this post informs and motivates you mamas to protect that beautiful skin of yours and your babies!! I promise it’s worth it.. Tuesday Tip: $10 Brow Makeover

I decided to start a new series on Tuesdays! I’m way excited about it actually. Each Tuesday I will be writing about one of my favorite tips. These will be tried and true my friends. No hocus pocus.

Today’s tip is getting the perfect eyebrows. The source of today’s tip is coming from this beauty:

I went to hair school with Clara and every time I see her I have some serious brow envy! Aren’t they amazing? So we are gonna hook you guys up with some brow secrets.

Here is what you need:

$10 Brow Makeover:

1. Elf angled brush ($3)

2. Maybeline eyeshadow – Made for Mocha ($2.75)

SIDE NOTE: Even though she has dark brown hair and I have a lighter blonde, we still both use this same color…weird I know. She adds more to fill in the color and I don’t add as much so it’s not as dark. Just make sure to blend it really well.

3. Spoolie brush – free at make up stores

4. NYX wonder pencil (roughly $3)

Friday Fitness: WOTD in 8 minutes!

I’ve got a special treat in store for y’all today!

This workout is Trista tried, tested and approved! I’ve put together a circuit that can be done at HOME, with NO equipment, and during nap time…even if that’s short!  The thing I love most about it is that it can last 8 minutes (seriously), 16 minutes, 28, or even longer.  So if you get started and only make it through this circuit once before the babe wakes up, that’s okay!  This is a great all over workout with a healthy dose of cardio to spike our metabolism!  Ideally I will go through this 3 times, and of course stretch after!

Now, if you need some motivation to get into this workout, don’t just stop reading and move onto pinterest!  I have just the thing… click here or here!  I’ve been obsessed with listening to motivational speeches on youtube and it pumps me up so much!

Now, let’s get to it! Ps enjoy my efforts in trying to get pics to display these exercises!  If nothing else, your abs will get a workout from laughing at with me 🙂

  1. Warm up with 15 seconds of jogging in place to loosen upIMG_1487
  2. Jump Squats – start in standing position. Jump out into a nice deep squat.  Be mindful to avoid having your knees go past your toes!  Do 15!IMG_1480
  3. Butt kicks – do as it says.  Kick your butt.  15 seconds, so go HARD!IMG_1488
  4. Walk out to plank – start in standing position, and without arching your back, make your way down to plank position, hold for a second, then return to standing position.  Repeat 15 times.IMG_1481
  5. High knees – bring your knees up to your chest.  Alternate each knee FAST.  As you do so, focus on pulling up with your lower abs.  Go hard for 15 seconds.IMG_1489
  6. Dips – find a piece of furniture and position yourself so you are resting your weight on your hands and the heels of your feet.  Dip down by ending your elbows, keep your pelvis stationary, and pull up by straightening.image1
  7. Butt kicks – again 🙂 15 seconds, go hard!IMG_1488
  8. Side squats – I love these.  Start in standing position, feet forward.  Step out to your left, and squat deep.  Again, be mindful that your knee doesn’t over extend.  Squeeze your booty as you stand up to the beginning position.  Repeat on the right side.  Do 15 on each side.IMG_1482
  9. High knees – again!  15 seconds!  Go get it!IMG_1489
  10. Push ups – we all remember these!  You can do them on your toes, or modify on your knees.  Keep your back flat and abs tight.  15 reps!IMG_3956
  11. Butt kicks – only 15 seconds, so go hard!IMG_1488
  12. Mountain climbers – get in plank position, hands shoulder width apart.  Bring your left knee up to your chest, return, take the right knee to chest and return.  Do it as fast or slow as you need to keep moving.  Repeat for 15 seconds.image2
  13. High knees – last rep of high knees, so finish strong… 15 seconds!IMG_1489
  14. Side plank, plank and side plank – squeeze your abs tight and try to keep your body in a straight line as best as possible.  Hold each pose for 15 seconds.IMG_1483
  15. Jumping jacks!  This is the last bout of cardio, so take yourself to the limit!  15 reps, but if you want to max out, go for it!!! (this is the best picture I could get of me doing jumping jacks, so enjoy that while you finish up!)IMG_3974

What Beauty Really Means

I don’t know why I’ve had this on my mind a lot.

Wrinkles.

To me, there is nothing more beautiful then wrinkles of someone who has traveled miles full of love.

Exhibit A:

I don’t know why society makes everyone have such a negative view on wrinkles or even scars. Both have stories to tell.

I love the quote by Marjorie Pay Hinckley:

“I don’t want to drive up to the pearly gates in a shiny sports car, wearing beautifully, tailored clothes, my hair expertly coiffed, and with long, perfectly manicured fingernails.

I want to drive up in a station wagon that has mud on the wheels from taking kids to scout camp.

I want to be there with a smudge of peanut butter on my shirt from making sandwiches for a sick
neighbors children.

I want to be there with a little dirt under my fingernails from helping to weed someone’s garden.

I want to be there with children’s sticky kisses on my cheeks and tears of a friend on my shoulder.

I want the Lord to know I was really here and that I really lived.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself. I absolutely love that quote and I hope when I get older I’ll be proud of the wrinkles, scars, and miles of love that I hope to have traveled within my life.  To me that is what beauty really means.

Secret Obsession

Well friends, after a month and a half without having internet, our friend at AT&T finally hooked us up! Meanwhile, I will tell you about my secret obsession.

Coconut Oil.

(Trader Joe’s. 6 bucks. Lasts forever.)

I know there’s been lot of hype about it, but these are my top 10 favorite things to use it for. Hopefully now that I can sit down and write I will have more meaningful posts than oil.

But until then… here’s my top 10:

1. DEEP CONDITIONER: Put it on after you shampoo your hair and let it sit while you finish showering.

2. FRIZZ CONTROL: Just put a tiny drop the size of a dime on your hands, rub together and put on ends of hair. It is a lot like biosilk.

3. BAGGY EYE TREATMENT: Guys, I do this one every night. Ever since having my little, I swear I look 10 years older just from lack of sleep! I started to do this and it just helps you feel refreshed in the morning to smooth skin under your eyes. I get the worst baggy eyes, so I love this one! WARNING: your husband might think you are crying because it leaves a little glistening look on your face. Use it for the sympathy card if needed;)

4. SHAVING CREAM: Silky smooth.

5. LIP BALM: This is also a nightly ritual with my baggy eye treatment.

6. SCALP TREATMENT: This is great for a dry scalp or dandruff. Use a cotton ball, dip it in the coconut oil and go along your scalp doing 1/4 inch sections. Massage your scalp afterwards. I don’t have too much time to do this one on myself, but it’s great for a girls night!

7. STRETCH MARK PREVENTATIVE: I used this on my pregnant belly occasionally and swear by it!

8. EYE LASHES: Just use a q-tip and dab someone the roots of your eye lashes to condition and strengthen them!

9. “STICKY” REMOVER: Okay, this one has nothing to do with “Beauty”… but i’m tellin ya. I had a grease stain on one of my pans that even the dishwasher couldn’t get out and I finally caved and tried my oil. Now I have a clean pan again. Don’t knock it til ya try it!

10. HAND OR BODY SCRUB: This might be one of my favorites. All you do is mix it in with some sugar and use like soap. I remember trying a hand scrub at bath and body that was so magical and this does the same thing. Gets rid of your dead skin and your skin is SO soft afterwards.

This stuff works wonders I tell ya.
